I hate Settlers of Catan

I am probably the worst Settlers player alive. I’m a lousy dice-roller, worst at commanding card transactions and I always seem to get stuck with a bunch of stuff in my hand that I can’t use.

But that is not the worst part. The real big problem is that in Settlers, sometimes, you get glimmers of hope, you get kissed by the gods and you go on riding the wave of good fortune, just to be kicked down again mercilessly by the same fortune that teased you with delusions of grandeur a couple of minutes ago.

There is no strategy in Settlers, however it wants you to think otherwise by convincing you that YOU are building an empire while in reality YOU’re not. No sir. You are given raw materials that you don’t need by your boss – the dice – and when you want to trade them, you end up finding that all your fellow builders have been dealt the same hand.

How this has become one of the best selling games of all time is beyond me, simply because it just inspires hatred in me. Hatred like I haven’t felt even for Monopoly or Risk.
